After the fall of Saddam's regime, families of the disappeared were able to search openly for their loved ones for the first time, and the bodies were sometimes found buried in mass graves. More haunting though was the thought held by some that their loved ones were still alive and held in underground prisons that had been sealed up as Saddam's regime began to crumble.
