It wasn’t until halfway through the Gulf War that I realised ‘collateral damage’ could include human (Iraqi) casualties. The term suggests damaged buildings, bricks and mortar, and is used as a way to sanitise and hide the human cost of war. It is impossible to imagine British or American casualties described in this way.
